Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFThe greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth’s surface. When the Sun’s energy reaches the Earth’s atmosphere, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases. Following are the Keynotes Related to the Greenhouse Effect:
- A greenhouse gas (sometimes abbreviated GHG) is a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy within the thermal infrared range.
- Greenhouse gases cause the greenhouse effect on planets. The primary greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere are water vapour (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and ozone (O3) and some artificial chemicals such as Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
- Without greenhouse gases, the average temperature of Earth's surface would be about −18 °C (0 °F), rather than the present average of 15 °C (59 °F).
- The atmospheres of Venus, Mars and Titan also contain greenhouse gases.
- Like other greenhouse gases, Nitrous oxide absorbs radiation and traps heat in the atmosphere, where it can live for an average of 114 years.
Hence, we conclude that Nitrous Oxide is a Greenhouse Gas.
