• The Panchseel agreement was signed between Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and China's first Premier Zhou Enlai.
• The principles were first codified during an agreement between India and China in 1954.
• The principles were emphasized by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru in a speech at the Asian Prime Ministers conference at Columbo.

• The five principles of the agreement are mutual respect for each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in other's internal affairs, equality, peace, and mutual benefit.
