The cytoplasm is the cellular substance found within the confines of the cell nucleus in eukaryotic cells. It is composed of several fundamental components, namely:
- Cytosol - the semi-fluid substance
- Organelles - the cellular machinery
- Various cytoplasmic inclusions or particles
Cytosol: The cytosol is essentially the area of the cytoplasm that is not occupied by organelles. It is a semi-fluid substance that is primarily composed of water, salts, organic molecules, and cytoskeletal filaments. The other components of the cytoplasm are dispersed within this jelly-like substance.
Organelles: The cytoplasm is home to various organelles such as the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, the Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, vacuoles, and in the case of plant cells, chloroplasts. These organelles, which can be likened to tiny cellular organs encapsulated by membranes, perform crucial functions that support the survival of the cell.
Cytoplasmic Inclusions: Cytoplasmic inclusions are essentially insoluble particles that are suspended in the cytosol. These inclusions can store energy and granules of substances like starch and glycogen. The type of inclusions varies from cell to cell.
