Asexual spores, also known as mitospores, are produced via mitosis without the need for meiosis. There is an array of asexual spores produced by diverse fungi species, with some capable of generating multiple types. An example is F. oxysporum , which produces chlamydospores with a thick wall, smaller-sized microconidia, and macroconidia that resemble the shape of bananas.
Fungi primarily produce two types of asexual spores: conidia and sporangiospores. The distinguishing factors between these two are the processes that lead to their creation and the morphology of the sporophore that produces them.
Examples of asexual spores are arthrospores, conidia, chlamydospores, and sporangiospores.
Sporangiospores are a type of asexual spores that form within a walled sporangium. These include the motile zoospores of chytrids that are released into water from their zoosporangia, and the zygomycetes' spores that are exposed to the air when the mature sporangial wall splits. Conidia (singular: conidium) are asexual spores that form on conidiophores.
