The term 'waist bone' is often used colloquially, but in the realm of anatomy, this structure is more accurately referred to as the pelvis or pelvic girdle. This intricate structure is made up of several bones that join together to perform a variety of crucial functions.

The pelvis consists of several bones, each with its unique role and structure. These include the sacrum, coccyx, ischium, ilium, and pubis. Together, these bones form a basin-like structure that supports the weight of the upper body and helps distribute this weight to the lower limbs. This is particularly important during movement, as the pelvic bones work in unison to reduce the force transmitted from the feet and legs to the spine and upper body.

The function of the pelvis extends beyond weight distribution. This structure also plays a vital role in housing and protecting the organs of the abdomen. These include important organs like the bladder, rectum, and in women, the uterus and ovaries. The pelvis also plays a crucial role in childbirth.

The pelvic girdle forms a part of the appendicular skeleton, the portion of the skeleton that includes the bones of the limbs. It acts as a connecting bridge between the lower limbs and the axial skeleton, which includes the bones of the trunk and head. Similarly, the pectoral girdle connects the upper limbs to the axial skeleton.
