It integrates concepts from Marxism, cultural ecology, and cultural evolution. Marvin Harris coined the term "Cultural Materialism" in his book "The Rise of Anthropological Theory" in 1968. However, despite its foundation in Marxist anthropology, the theory does not employ a dialectical approach. Although it faced limited acceptance among anthropologists in the early 1980s, by the late 1980s, many began to rely on cultural materialism for analyzing societal development and issues within capitalist societies.

For example, he argued that the Hindu taboo against cow slaughter in India is due to practical reasons such as the cow’s utility for milk and labor.
