The recruitment process for any service, which comes under the civil services of India requires eligibility. The eligibility of the candidates is tested through one of the toughest examinations across the country i.e. UPSC Exam. The training of IPS officers is arranged at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad. The authorised cadre strength of the Indian Police Service is 4920. (3270 Direct Recruitment Posts and 1650 Promotional Posts). The Civil List of IPS officers is an annually updated list maintained by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which is affiliated with the Government of India. The same bodies carry forward the cadre allocation process for the officers. This Civil List can be accessed from the MHA website.

Foundation Course at LBSNAA
  • The LBSNAA Academy focuses on inter-services camaraderie and collaboration as well as civil service capacity building and institution enhancement.
  • The All India Services and Central Services Foundation Course is designed for new recruits (Group A). It equips new officer trainees with the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitude to serve as public employees.
  • Officers of the Indian Administrative Service continue their professional training at the academy after the foundation phase, while officers of other services attend staff colleges such as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad, which trains personnel from the Indian Police Service.

First Phase I

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) is in charge of training young IPS officers to become professional cops. The Indian national institute for training Indian Police Service (IPS) officers is the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad.

Objective of Phase I

The base course phase comprises basic training regarding personality, behaviour, etc. Mentioned below are some of the base course topics:

  • Build capacity through the matrix of sensitization, orientation and competency.
  • Impart professional knowledge and understanding.
  • Develop professional, organizational and community skills.
  • Nurture human values, right attitudes and appropriate behaviour in professional and personal life and inculcate sensitivity.
  • Develop overall personality (character, self-discipline, habits, soft skills, norms, etiquette, values, etc).
  • Transform the probationers into leaders of police stations and police districts.

Basic Training 

The Basic Training Course is the second part of IPS training, and it takes place at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad (SVPNPA). Officer Trainees (OTs) study numerous indoor, outdoor, and qualifying disciplines during this phase, which lasts 11 months.

Second Phase – Training at SVPNPA

The IPS training’s second phase is split into two parts. The National Police Academy in Hyderabad will host the first phase. IPS officers must also complete some training in a district of their cadre. Before the IPS officer trainees are assigned to their various state cadres to carry out their tasks, they are sent to this foremost police training school in the country.

IPS Officer Training – Compulsory Subjects

The probationers are expected to have a good grasp of the compulsory subjects that are listed below:

  • Police in Modern India
  • Indian Evidence Act, 1872
  • Indian Penal Code, 1860
  • Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973
  • Special Laws
  • Crime Prevention & Criminology
  • Investigation
  • Forensic Medicine
  • Forensic Science (Theory and Practicals)
  • Maintenance of Public Peace and Order
  • Internal Security
  • Police Leadership and Management
  • Ethics and Human Rights
  • Information & Communication Technology

Many more compulsory subjects such as rock climbing, Yoga, Physical fitness, unarmed combat, swimming and map-reading are also included.

Does an IPS Officer need physical fitness?

Physical training aims to promote development of the personality of an officer trainee in physical activities. Here is a list of the physical activities that go in the process of training as a part of the IPS preparation.

  • Military craft & tactics and map reading
    • airstrike setting, defend manoeuvres, military movement use of terrain,
    • setting up counter-insurgency camps, map-reading, movement with and without GPS assistance,
    • Path marches of up to 40 km with a full combat load, explosive handling, etc.
    • The equitation (horse riding)
    • Drill for First Aid and ambulance
  • Indoor compulsory subjects:
    • Fitness physique (PT, athletics, gymnasium, sports, cross country races up to 20 km)
    • Drill
    • Yoga
    • Unarmed warfare
    • Swimming diving
  • Rock climbing, assault preparation and firearms training are also included in the exercises
    • assembly/disassembly,
    • handling and shooting of revolvers,
    • handguns, machine arms, shotguns, mortars, explosives, etc.

Medical Fitness Tests

A candidate who successfully clears all three rounds of the exam is selected by UPSC. He/she is further subjected to a medical examination as per standard norms. All candidates have to undergo a medical test to qualify for various posts. This is the basic medical examination. Candidates selected under technical posts like IPS, Railway Protection Force, DANIPS etc. have special medical guidelines for candidates with respect to height, chest measurements etc. to fulfil. For IPS, the physical standard measurements prescribed are:

Further Medical Requirements

IPS candidates should also have these standard requirements:

  • Blood pressure: For candidates below 25 years, systolic pressure should be in the range of 100-130 mm & diastolic pressure less than 90 mm. For candidates above 25 years, systolic pressure should be in the range of 110-140 mm and diastolic pressure less than 90 mm.
  • Candidates should not suffer from nasal stuttering disorders during the conversation.
  • Candidates should have the good hearing ability. Ears should be able to hear sounds between 1000-4000 frequency hertz. Hearing impairment, if any, should be less than 30 decibels.
  • Women candidates should not be pregnant while undergoing medical tests.
  • Corrections permitted such as Use of spectacles and contact lenses. Lasik, ICL and IOL surgeries.
  • Colour vision should be high graded and there should be binocular vision.
  • The squint eye condition is not accepted.

These were some additional medical requirements stated by the authorities and in order to become an IPS officer, the candidate has to match all the requirements listed above.

IPS Officers Eligibility criteria
  • Nationality: Applicants must be Indian citizens only.
  • Age Criteria: The age criteria of all the candidates are brought in the record as of 1st August of the year in which the exam is being conducted.
    • Minimum Age limit – 21 Years
    • Maximum Age limit – 32 Years
    • If a candidate is applying for the year 2021, he/she should have been born between 2nd August 1988 and 1st August 1999 only.
  • Age Relaxation: All candidates belonging to reserved categories must receive relaxation within the upper age limit. Listed below is the age relaxation criteria.

Even though after the probationary period, the candidate must be health-wise eligible for the designation of an IPS officer.

IPS Officer Cadre Allocation

IPS officers undergo a Cadre Allocation process and their training still continues even after the cadre is allocated. Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT) is liable for designating the cadre to the IAS and IPS officers. The allocation is chiefly based on their preference, vacancies and the rank that they’ve secured in the UPSC Examination. To make the procedure of IPS cadre allocation easier, the joint cadre and states are divided into 5 zones. These 5 zones are:-
