The Kapila program is also known as the Kalam Program for Intellectual Property Literacy and Awareness campaign. It was launched in 2020 by the union government to create awareness of Intellectual Property Literacy and Patents awareness. It was named after and launched on the 89th birthday of Former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The day is also celebrated as National Innovation Day.

Launch
KAPILA program was launched on 15th Oct 2020 on the 89th birth anniversary of former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. During the launch, it was decided the week of Oct from 15th to 23rd was Intellectual Property Literacy Week.

Major Objectives of KAPILA Kalam Program
The KAPILA program's primary objective is to increase understanding of intellectual property rights. Further objectives are listed under Recognizing and Fostering Innovation in Intellectual Property in Higher Education Institutions.
- It will develop an IPR credit mechanism.
- With the importance of IPR, it will also emphasize raising awareness of the need to complete IP procedures in India and globally.

Need for KAPILA Kalam Program
The Indian government will use this program to raise knowledge about the benefits of patenting innovations. This will help move the nation towards economic independence. The government works to investigate how patents might be used with these technologies to maximize the potential of IP rights. The nation will eventually become independent as a result of this.
Importance of KAPILA Kalam Program

Intellectual Property Rights, or IPR, are rights given to persons for innovative creations. IPR gives them the right to use these creations over a certain period. They are mainly divided into two parts.
- Copyrights and Rights related to copyright– Under this right, authors of literary works and artistic works are covered for a minimum period of 50 years after the death of the creator.
- Industrial Property – It can further be divided into two main areas.
- Protection of distinctive signs, particularly trademark and geographical indicators.
- This category includes industrial design and trade secrets protected primarily to stimulate innovation.

- The Kapil Program Institution Innovation Council annual report was also introduced at the launch.
- It aims to promote innovation in young learners and motivate, encourage and facilitate new creative visions through activities related to entrepreneurship and innovation.
- The Institution Innovation Council has set up approximately 1700 higher educational institutions and plans to set up more in future.
