Kittur Rani Chennamma is known as the "Queen of Kittur." She was a legendary Indian freedom fighter who played an important role in the struggle against British colonial rule in India. She was a brave warrior who fought for the rights of her people. She also became a symbol of resistance against the British Raj. She is an inspiration for women's empowerment and gender equality

Kittur Rani Chennamma Against Britishers

Kittur Rani Chennamma’s date of birth is 23 october 1778 in the princely state of Kittur, now located in the Belgaum district of Karnataka. Chennamma's father, the ruler of Kittur, died when she was just a child. She was married to the ruler of another kingdom, Raja Mallasarja. Some of the facts about Kittur Rani Chennama are given below:

  • Rani chennamma was the ruler of Kittur and she ascended to the throne in 1824.
  • After her husband's death, Chennamma was chosen by the people of Kittur to be their ruler. 
  • The British government at the time had a policy of annexing Indian kingdoms that were not under their control, and they began to eye Kittur as well.
  • In 1824, the British demanded Chennamma accept their suzerainty and pay tribute. But she refused to submit to their rule.
  • This led to a confrontation between the Kittur army and the British forces, resulting in a battle.
  • Rani channamma revolted against british with her army. She fought bravely against the British. But they were overpowered due to the British's superior weaponry and numerical strength.
  • Chennamma was captured and imprisoned along with her lieutenant, Sangolli Rayanna.
  • Chennamma's bravery and courage in standing up to the British inspired many others to join the freedom struggle against colonial rule despite her defeat.
  • Her legacy continued to live on, and she became a symbol of resistance against oppression and exploitation.
  • In 1956, the government of India posthumously awarded her the title of 'Rani' (queen). This title served as recognition of her bravery and contribution to the Indian freedom struggle.

Doctrine of Lapse

The Doctrine of Lapse was a policy implemented by the British East India Company. This policy allowed them to annex any Indian state whose ruler died without a natural heir. The Doctrine was introduced in 1848 by Lord Dalhousie, the Governor-General of India. This policy served as a means of expanding British territories and consolidating their power over India.

  • Kittur Rani Chennamma, who was the queen of the princely state of Kittur, became a victim of this policy. 
  • After the death of her husband, she ascended to the throne of Kittur in 1824. 
  • However, the British did not recognize her claim to the throne and instead imposed their own 'administrator' in the region.
  • In 1829, Chennamma adopted a son as her heir and successor. But the British refused to recognize him as the legitimate heir and continued to interfere in the affairs of the state. 
  • In 1830, the British demanded Chennamma accept their suzerainty and pay tribute, but she refused.
  • This led to a confrontation between the Kittur army and the British forces, resulting in a battle. 
  • Chennamma was captured and imprisoned along with her lieutenant, Sangolli Rayanna.
  • After her capture, the British annexed the state of Kittur under the Doctrine of Lapse. 
  • The policy was used to annex several other Indian states, including Jhansi, Satara, Nagpur, and Oudh. 
  • Indians deeply resented the policy, as it was seen as a violation of their sovereignty and an attack on their way of life.

Death of Kittur Rani Chennamma

After her capture, freedom fighter Kittur Rani Chennamma was imprisoned in Bailhongal Fort, where she spent the rest of her life in captivity. She was kept in solitary confinement and was denied access to proper medical care, leading to her deteriorating health.

  • Despite her imprisonment, Chennamma remained defiant and refused to accept British rule. 
  • She resisted their efforts to subjugate her people, inspiring others to join the fight for independence.
  • It is believed that she died due to poor living conditions and a lack of proper medical care during her imprisonment. 
  • She was kept in solitary confinement in the Bailhongal Fort. She was denied access to basic necessities like food, water, and sanitation. 
  • Chennamma's health continued to worsen, and she passed away on February 21, 1829, at the age of 30. 
  • Her death was a great loss to the people of Kittur, who mourned her passing and continued to cherish her memory.

The Kittur Utsav

The Kittur Utsav is an annual cultural festival held in Kittur in Karnataka, India. The festival is dedicated to the memory of Kittur Rani Chennama, a legendary queen of the 18th century. 

  • The Kittur Utsav is usually held in October or November and lasts several days. 
  • The festival is a celebration of the region's rich cultural heritage. 
  • This festival includes events associated with traditional music, dance, and theatrical performances.
  • The festival also includes a grand procession in which a statue of Kittur Rani Chennamma is carried through the town streets.
