The Lavender Revolution, a brainchild of the Union Ministry of Science & Technology through the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) Aroma Mission, is a transformative initiative that began in 2016. Its primary objective is to cultivate lavender, a fragrant herb renowned for its aromatic properties and myriad uses, in the enchanting landscape of Jammu & Kashmir.

Lavender cultivation under the Lavender Revolution has spread its fragrant wings across almost all of the 20 districts in Jammu & Kashmir. This broad coverage ensures that the aromatic charm of lavender is not confined to one region but reaches far and wide.

The Lavender Revolution has nurtured growth in multiple ways:

Free Saplings for First-Time Farmers: As part of this mission, first-time lavender farmers were provided with free lavender saplings. This support aimed to encourage new entrants into the lavender cultivation sector.

Affordable Access for Experienced Farmers: For those who were already familiar with lavender cultivation, the mission offered lavender saplings at a nominal cost of Rs. 5-6 per sapling. This accessibility ensured that experienced farmers could expand their lavender cultivation efforts.

Goals

The Lavender Revolution has set ambitious goals to achieve:

Promoting Domestic Aromatic Crops: One of the primary aims of this mission is to shift the focus from imported aromatic oils to homegrown varieties. This promotes self-sufficiency in aromatic crops and reduces dependence on imports.

Lavender Oil Production: The Lavender Revolution primarily revolves around the production of Lavender oil, a highly sought-after aromatic product. Lavender oil can fetch prices as high as Rs. 10,000 per litre, making it a lucrative endeavor for farmers.

Utilizing By-Products: In addition to lavender oil, the Lavender Revolution utilizes by-products like Lavender water, which is used to make incense sticks, and Hydrosol, formed after distillation from the flowers, used to make soaps and room fresheners.

The Lavender Revolution aligns seamlessly with the government's vision of doubling farm incomes by 2022. What is an Aroma Mission?

The CSIR Aroma Mission is a visionary project aimed at bringing transformative change to the aroma sector. This initiative encompasses interventions in agriculture, processing, and product development, all with the goal of igniting the growth of the aroma industry and rural employment.

  • One of the primary objectives of the Aroma Mission is to promote the cultivation of aromatic crops specifically for essential oils. These oils are in high demand in the aroma industry and present lucrative opportunities for Indian farmers.
  • The Aroma Mission aspires to position Indian farmers and the aroma industry as global leaders in the production and export of essential oils, similar to the success of menthol mint production.
  • The mission isn't just about profit; it's about enabling farmers to achieve higher profits, reclaiming waste lands for productive use, and protecting crops from wild and grazing animals.

Aroma Mission Phase-I and II

The Aroma Mission has made significant strides:

Phase-I Success

In Phase-I, the CSIR helped cultivate 6000 hectares of land, covering 46 Aspirational districts across the country. More than 44,000 individuals received training, setting the stage for a promising future.

The Ongoing Phase-II

In February 2021, CSIR launched Phase-II of the Aroma Mission, which aims to engage over 45,000 skilled human resources and benefit more than 75,000 farming families across the country. This phase is a testament to the mission's commitment to continual growth and development.

Nodal Agencies and Outcomes

The CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CSIR-CIMAP), based in Lucknow, serves as the nodal laboratory for the Aroma Mission. The intended outcomes of this ambitious endeavor include:

  • Bringing an additional 5500 hectares of land under aromatic crop cultivation, with a focus on rain-fed and degraded lands.
