A trader gives a 40% discount on his goods. Further, he gives a 20% discount on the goods.

Formula used:

Single equivalent discount, D = D1 + D2 - (D1 × D2)/100

Where, D1 = first discount, D2 = second discount

Calculation:

D1 = 40%, D2 = 20%

⇒ D = 40 + 20 - (40 × 20)/100

⇒ D = 60 - 8

⇒ D = 52%
