Let the bigger number be Q.
Smaller number = (680 - Q)
According to the question,
Q(1 - 15%) = (680 - Q)(1 + 15%)
⇒ Q/(680 - Q) = 23/17
⇒ 17Q = 23 × 680 - 23Q
⇒ 40Q = 23 × 680
⇒ Q = 23 × 17
⇒ Q = 391
So, the smaller number = 680 - 391 = 289
∴ The smaller number is 289.
