Amnesty International (AI) – An Overview

Amnesty International is a global organization that promotes the defense of human rights. It is unbiased toward political parties, philosophies, and differences in religion because it is independent of all governments.

  • The movement strives to free women and men who have been detained due to their opinions, skin color, ethnicity, or place of worship, provided they haven’t themselves used force or encouraged others to resort to violence. Amnesty International refers to these detainees as “prisoners of conscience.”
  • Amnesty International was originally a British organization, but in 1963 a global secretariat was created.
  • In 1963, while Amnesty International was growing quickly, Seán Mac Bride, who won the Nobel Peace Prize became the group’s chairman.
  • The organization included more than 1000 voluntary groups in 28 countries ten years after its founding, and the numbers are continuously increasing. There were 1874 groups in 33 countries in February 1977.
  • Thomas Hammarberg, a Swede, is Amnesty International’s current chairman.
  • Amnesty International has waged movements opposing torture and other ill-treatment, as well as, more recently, against the death penalty, in addition to its work for the prisoners of conscience, or “the forgotten prisoners”.
  • These three responsibilities are listed as the most crucial ones for Amnesty International in the statutes that the group adopted in 1974.
  • The group received the United Nations Prize in the category of Human Rights in 1978 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 for its “Defense of human dignity against torture.”

When was Amnesty International Established?

A British lawyer named Peter Benenson started Amnesty International in 1961. In order to make an appeal in Britain for the release of prisoners of conscience (those who have been detained due to their beliefs, ethnicity, race, or skin color but have never used violence against others), Peter Benenson founded Amnesty International in London.

With the creation of an international secretariat in 1963, the British organization went global.

Objective of Amnesty International
  • Whenever and wherever abuses occur, conducting an investigation and making the facts public.
  • Influencing governments and other large organizations, such as corporations, to ensure they honor their commitments and adhere to international law.
  • Assisting people in defending their rights by providing them with training and instruction.
  • The organization’s specific goals include:
    • the abolition of the death penalty, the cessation of extrajudicial executions and “disappearances” and the provision of prompt and impartial trials for all prisoners of conscience.
    • guarantee that prison facilities adhere to global human rights norms.
    • ensuring universal free education, banning the employment of child soldiers.
    • decriminalising prostitution and abortion.
    • releasing all political prisoners of conscience.
    • encourage religious tolerance.
    • defend those who stand up for human rights, eliminate torture and other cruel treatment.
    • putting an end to unjustifiable killings committed during armed conflict.
    • upholding the rights of refugees, migrants and asylum seekers and safeguarding human dignity.

Guiding Principles of Amnesty International

With the guiding principles of international solidarity, effective action for the individual victim, international coverage, the indivisible and universal nature of human rights, independence and impartiality and democracy and respect for one another, Amnesty International creates a global community of human rights defenders.

  • Focusing on those who are imprisoned or barred from expressing their opinions due to violence is a founding principle of Amnesty International.
  • Amnesty International’s basic values also include non-intervention on political issues, a strong dedication to obtaining facts about the various cases, and the promotion of human rights, in addition to this opposition to the suppression of freedom of expression.
  • Since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights acknowledges that individuals may “be compelled to take recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression,” AI does not reject the political use of violence in and of itself. AI will not request the government to release a prisoner who is serving a term for violent behavior which was the result of a fair trial.
  • As with its stance on a government policy of employing military action to combat armed opposition movements, AI neither endorses nor condemns the use of violence by political opposition groups in and of itself. However, AI backs minimally humane norms that both governments and armed opposition groups ought to uphold. AI denounces abuses when an opposition organization kidnaps, tortures, or murders its prisoners, or engages in willful and arbitrary killings.
  • Regardless of the act committed, the circumstances surrounding the person, or the execution technique, Amnesty International condemns the death penalty under all circumstances.

The Vision and Mission of Amnesty International

The vision of Amnesty International is to ensure that everyone in the world has access to all of the rights guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other global human rights treaties.

Amnesty International’s mission is to establish a global network of human rights defenders in order to carry out research and take action aimed at stopping serious violations of these rights.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights
  • The rights and freedoms of all people are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a global declaration that was approved by the United Nations General Assembly.
  • Eleanor Roosevelt served as the chairperson of the UN committee that drafted the document, which was approved as Resolution 217 by the General Assembly on December 10, 1948, at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, France.
  • 48 of the 58 members of the UN at the time voted in support, 0 voted against, 8 withdrew, and 2 did not take part in the voting.
  • The Declaration of Human Rights is a key document in the history of civil and human rights. It has 30 articles that describe an individual’s “basic rights and fundamental freedoms” and assert that these rights are global, inherent, and relevant to all people.

Structure of Amnesty International
  • Amnesty is led by the International Board, which is in charge of the organization’s London-based International Secretariat. The International Executive Council is the name of the board, which is made up of 8 members chosen for two years.
  • A group of Senior Directors support the Secretary-General, who serves as the International Secretariat’s chief executive officer. Dr. Agnes Callamard is the Secretary-General at present.
  • The International Secretariat is in charge of doing research, compiling reports, and giving legal analyses to persuade foreign governments. It also endorses campaign materials and keeps an eye on the organization’s financial situation. These activities are carried out by Amnesty International Limited and Amnesty International Charity Limited, two registered organizations.
  • Amnesty International has sections at the national and regional levels that lobby local authorities, carry out fundraising campaigns, enlist supporters, and carry out research on human rights violations in their nation.
  • Members of Amnesty International are grouped into “sections” in nations where the organization is well-established. With a sizable number of members, some of whom will organize into “groups” and qualified personnel, sections often oversee fundamental Amnesty International tasks such as campaigns, social media engagement, fundraising, education, and recruitment.

What are the Areas of Work Looked into by Amnesty International?

Amnesty International focuses on governments in particular, but also publishes information about non-governmental organizations and private citizens (“non-state actors”). Amnesty International works in six main areas:

  • Children’s, minorities’, indigenous peoples’, and women’s rights
  • Eliminating torture
  • Death penalty abolition
  • Refugees’ rights
  • Rights of prisoners of conscience
  • Preservation of human dignity

Amnesty International India

A national affiliate of the Amnesty International network, Amnesty International India was a supporter of and defender of human rights and dignity on a global scale. In Bihar, an Amnesty International office was originally established in 1966. Amnesty stopped operating in the nation in September 2020 as a result of the Indian government blocking its bank accounts. Additionally, the government has launched an investigation into Amnesty by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Amnesty’s Justification

  • It claims that owing to continuous demands for openness and opposition to human rights abuses in the nation, the government has frozen its financial accounts.
  • The European Union (EU) has also voiced its opposition to the government’s actions, citing Amnesty International’s esteemed global work.
  • Amnesty International (AI) India recently demanded the creation of the National Commission for Human Rights in Jammu and Kashmir and an impartial investigation into all claims of police abuse of human rights during the north-east Delhi riots.
  • Indian Government’s Stand

    • Amnesty has been charged by the government with flouting the law. India forbids organizations supported by foreign funding from interfering with domestic political discussions. All parties are equally subject to this law, which includes Amnesty International too.
    • Amnesty UK sent significant sums of money to four entities with Indian registrations in order to get around the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010 (FCRA) laws by characterizing the transfers as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
    • A sizable sum of foreign money was also sent to Amnesty (India) under FCRA without the Ministry of Home Affairs’ consent. This money was rerouted in violation of the law at the time.

Concluding Remarks
  • Amnesty has undergone a significant makeover in order to respond to the swift changes in the world after more than 50 years of ground-breaking accomplishments around the world. It has developed itself outside of London in regions like Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.
  • The organisation has played a significant role in preventing human rights violations and raising issues such as brutality, discrimination, the death penalty, corporate responsibility, and control of weaponry.
  • It continues to be a strong force for freedom and justice while also creating tools with the newest technologies to keep up with the times.
