Lhonak Lake is the glacial lake situated in the northern portion of Sikkim, India. The lake has recently drawn much attention due to its susceptibility to Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), which become a severe threat to the places located around the lake. About Lhonak Lake Sikkim

Lhonak Lake is one of the several glacial lakes in Sikkim, which have emerged from melting glaciers. This lake, which is located in the remote Lhonak Valley of North West Sikkim, has created interest of late because of enhanced risks pertaining to melting glaciers and consequently unstable lakes. According to authentic information from the Indian Government agencies like National Disaster Management Authority, it has been found that the lake has expanded dramatically in recent decades because of the rising temperature and melting of glaciers.

Geographical Location of Lhonak Lake

Lhonak Lake is located at the terminus of the Lhonak Glacier, an amazing feature at the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. This geographical positioning places the lake within the limits of the Kanchenjunga National Park, which is classified as a pristine and fragile ecosystem. The coordinates of Lhonak Lake are generally positioned about 27.9874° N latitude and 88.0866° E longitude. Due to its remote location and rugged terrain, it poses a logistical challenge to observe and manage the lake, thus making it a rather hardened complexity within the region's disaster preparedness procedures.

Formation of Lhonak Lake

Lhonak Lake was formed due to ice movement and melting of ice over thousands of years. Shrinkage of the Lhonak Glacier created a basin which got occupied by meltwater and developed into the lake. According to the Geological Survey of India, GSI, Lhonak Lake has risen drastically in the last couple of decades, as have other expanding glacial lakes all over the globe, in turn triggered by global warming. Lhonak Lake's Susceptibility to GLOFs

GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Flood) is an abrupt outflow of water otherwise confined in the glacial lakes by various factors like ice melting, landslide, or avalanche. Lhonak Lake is one of those vulnerable ones in terms of geographical and climatic conditions. The sharp gradients of ice masses and unstable glaciers around the lake are prone to causing a catastrophic outburst flood. According to studies by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development that have also been supported by the NDMA, moraine dams are prone to cave-ins which hold water in the lake; hence, this could cause floods of such huge dimensions that they threaten communities, infrastructure, and the course downstream.
